Myrtle essential oil is distilled from the evergreen shrub botanically known as Myrtus communis, which is native to the Mediterranean region. The raw material is mostly leaves and stems. The extract is prized for its healing properties, which experts compare to that of eucalyptus oil, but myrtle is much milder...which doesn't mean it's less effective.

Myrtle oil - properties

Myrtle is useful for infections - it reduces congestion in the respiratory tract (mainly bronchi and lungs), neutralizes the formation of mucus and sputum accumulation, relieves cough. It effectively cleans the air from invisible but harmful microorganisms and revives it - not only when you are sick.

Regular use of myrtle essential oil improves the appearance of the skin, so it can be applied topically to blemishes or as a stand-alone skin care product to gently tighten the epidermis and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Although safe, it is concentrated, so care must be taken to properly dilute the product.

Myrtle is mostly used for medicinal purposes, but it also has a very interesting smell - it is light and fresh, with easily noticeable notes of camphor and herbs, as well as a surprising sweetness that gives the extract character. The aroma fights fatigue, anxiety and tension, provides energy and promotes well-being. Interestingly, it does not mask, but eliminates unpleasant (and usually annoying) odors that can spoil the atmosphere in any home.
