Pepsin is a protein-digesting enzyme produced in the body. Pepsin is made when pepsinogen, an inactive enzyme, mixes with stomach acid. Stomach acid converts pepsinogen into the active enzyme pepsin. Gentian (Gentian lutea) is an herb used to support digestive capacity. Its bitter nature can help support the body's production of digestive enzymes.
How does it work?
Betaine HCl is used to support the production of hydrochloric acid (also known as stomach acid) in the stomach. One of the functions of stomach acid is to break down the food entering the stomach into smaller particles, the acid is produced by the parietal cells of the stomach.
Betaine HCl has been shown to maintain a lower pH in the stomach, which can promote nutrient absorption if there is a lack of stomach acid. Gentian is an herb native to parts of Europe and Asia. The root has traditionally been used to support digestive function, mainly due to its bitter constituents. Some traditional texts attribute gentian to bitter tonic and digestive effects.
