Tagetes erecta (Tagetes erecta L) is a rich source of carotenoids, including lutein and zeaxanthin. Accumulations of carotenoids are located in the retina and macula of the eye, acting as a filter by absorbing ultraviolet rays. When the concentration of lutein decreases, the protection of the retina of the eye also deteriorates.
